Dumb Joke Makes Life Better

Jim Unger's Herman strip keeps publishing, whether anyone wants it to or not. Unger retired a long time ago, then came back, then decided to just run old strips with tweaked or reworked punchlines, then started running terribly drawn "new" comics that weren't funny at all, and now seems to be just reprints. In his best work, there is a sourness in Unger's comics that is sort of the complement to Larry David's-- both are misanthropic, but David has the optimism of being a depressive Success, and Unger runs the furrow of the rightly-depressive Loser.

Today's example manages to pull off a very dumb joke in the deadpan, immaculately professional sloppy-illustrated brushed-ink life-hatred that makes Herman, as a totality, a Wonder.
