A Poor Painting from a Good Artist

Hmm. This not very good 1918 Félix Edouard Vallotton sold yesterday for $2.4 million. This can only be a reflection of the fact that there are so many others really are exceptional.

Vallotton's starkly reductive woodcut style features large masses of undifferentiated black and areas of unmodulated white. While emphasizing outline and flat patterns, Vallotton generally made no use of the gradations and modeling traditionally produced by hatching.
